Association of Faith-Based Organizations (“AFBO”)

Our Mission Statement:

The Association of Faith-Based Organizations (“AFBO”) exists to preserve the constitutional freedom of faith-based organizations to staff on a religious basis.

Our Purpose:

AFBO believes that faith-based institutions preserve their religious identity by selecting leaders, employees and volunteers who agree with their faith views and can wholeheartedly promote their religious mission.

So-called “nondiscrimination policies” that prohibit faith-based organizations from taking religion or "sexual orientation" into account in hiring, membership or volunteer opportunities deny religious groups of their right to define themselves according to a shared religious identity.

Our Strategy:

AFBO challenges these “nondiscrimination” policies wherever they are applied to intrude upon the staffing rights of religious organizations, including

  • Employment discrimination statutes that fail to provide clear exemptions for religious employers;

  • State employee charitable payroll deduction campaigns that exclude faith-based groups from participating if they exercise their right to staff on a religious basis;
  • Hiring nondiscrimination requirements embedded in federal and state contracts for the provision of social services such as adoption/foster care services and rehabilitation care, which operate to disqualify distinctly religious providers; and
  • Public universities that deny registration and funding to student groups that select members and leaders on the basis of a shared statement of faith.
